You Need To Know This. Free Quit Smoking Course Part four Of 10, Lung Cancer

Welcome to part 4 of this free quit smoking course.

I do not want to scare you; I want to educate you because knowledge is a better companion than fear and misunderstanding. If you’re a smoker, you need to know about lung cancer because you have a one in six chance of it affecting you directly. Some facts to start with:

I highly recommend you study this particular blog post thoroughly, the case and the suggestions have so many differences. Every smoker runs a much higher risk of lung cancer than any non-smoker ever will. 90% of all lung cancer deaths happen in smokers or former-smokers Even if you quit, you’ll always have an increased risk of lung cancer so take this into account 10-15 years after quitting, your risk of lung cancer will be about half that of you had continued smoking. If you smoke till you die, there is a one in six chance of getting lung cancer Lung cancer that’s diagnosed early may be treated successfully and this is key to saving lives Lung cancer that’s found late is very difficult to treat with either surgery or chemotherapy or radiotherapy Vigilance is key – look out for the warning signs! What to look for:

There are lots of reasons why you may have symptoms that are found in lung cancer. Just because you have these symptoms doesn’t mean you have lung cancer. Just because you do not have these symptoms doesn’t mean you do not have lung cancer either!

A chest infection that just will not go away, even with antibiotics Having a cough for more than 3 weeks Feeling more tired than usual Generating more spit or phlegm than usual, especially if there is blood in it (this can be a sign of a bleeding carcinoma) Feeling out of breath Losing your voice but not having a sore throat Chest pains Swelling in your face or neck Losing weight for no apparent reason or despite trying to eat more

If you’re a smoker, it might seem embarrassing to go and see a doctor about these symptoms. You might feel stupid because you’re a smoker “so of course you have a cough and chest pains”. You might just not want to confront the possibility that after all these years, it did finally happen to you; you were not lucky!

The most important thing a smoker can do is get it checked. Go and see your doctor. Early diagnosis massively increases your chances of being treated successfully. Late diagnosis massively increases your chances of being terminal.

Getting checked out:

If you have symptoms, you should get yourself checked out with your doctor. Early diagnosis saves lives and if you’re not ill, you’ll get the peace of mind you deserve. Your doctor will examine you – take a written list of the symptoms you have so you do not miss anything and be as descriptive as possible as this will help the doctor understand what might be wrong. Your doctor may arrange for a chest x-ray and then talk you through the findings. If you need further investigation or treatment, your doctor will refer you to a chest specialist. What if I’m diagnosed late?

As with any disease, it’s easier to treat the disease if it’s caught early and hasn’t had a chance to spread.

When you have cancer, it’s named from the ‘primary’ cancer so if the primary is in your lung, you have lung cancer. If it’s in your colon, it would be colon cancer.

When you get cancer, it develops and fragments of the primary can break off and travel around the body. This process is called metastasis. The fragments can then ‘snag’ in another part of the body and become ‘secondary’ cancer sites. In lung cancer, this often happens in the liver and kidneys as the blood from the lungs travels to the liver and kidneys next, then on to the rest of the body.

As a result, late diagnosis of lung cancer can be untreatable because the body becomes literally riddled with cancer spots. Chemotherapy can help but it can be very unpleasant and leave the patient feeling very unwell.

You can find out more by searching the net for cancer related websites.

Sorry to have to lay this miserable news on you but I want you to understand the importance of not only reducing your risk by quitting smoking but also let you know what to look out for so if the worst happens, you’re aware of what is going on.
